Former Alabama Crimson Tide star Damien Harris is full of admiration for his alma materās new quarterback, Ty Simpson, who has quickly become one of college footballās brightest stars.
In his first full season as the Crimson Tideās starting quarterback, the 22-year-old junior has powered Alabama to a 5-1 record and a No. 6 national ranking heading into their highly anticipated matchup against the No. 11 Tennessee Volunteers. Simpsonās statistical dominance ā 16 touchdowns, just one interception, and a 172.4 passer efficiency rating ā has firmly placed him among the frontrunners for the Heisman Trophy.
āTy Simpsonās been nothing short of amazing,ā Harris said in an exclusive interview. āEven in the Week 1 game against Florida State, when everything around him wasnāt going well ā from communication to defensive struggles ā he stayed composed, made smart decisions, and never put the ball in harmās way.ā
Simpson earned the starting role over highly touted freshman Keelon Russell, and heās proven that head coach Kalen DeBoer made the right call. Harris says Simpson has transformed into āthe generalā of the Alabama offense ā a leader who controls formations, signals routes, and manages pressure with poise beyond his years.
āHe gets guys lined up, communicates perfectly, and even uses just a look or a signal to adjust plays,ā Harris explained. āHeās taken full control of this offense. I donāt know if thereās anybody I can compare him to.ā
Still, Harris likened Simpsonās style to a blend of AJ McCarronās precision and Mac Jonesā pocket presence, adding that Simpson also brings mobility similar to Jalen Milroeās. āHe extends plays, converts third downs with his legs, and allows receivers to uncover late,ā Harris said. āHis talent level is phenomenal.ā
Ahead of Alabamaās rivalry clash with Tennessee, Harris emphasized the importance of sticking to Alabamaās brand of football ā balancing a strong running game with disciplined defense. He also challenged sophomore receiver Ryan Williams to step up his consistency, noting that his potential mirrors that of Ohio State star Jeremiah Smith.
Off the field, Harris will represent Alabama at Dr. Pepperās āPepper Portalā gameday event, connecting fans from Tuscaloosa to Knoxville. āWhen you think college football, you think Dr. Pepper,ā he said. āItās all about the fans ā the passion, the pride, and the energy that make this sport special.ā
