🚨 “Prayers for Meadows: Alabama Freshman WR Sidelined After Brutal Hit, Concussion Confirmed
The Incident
During Alabama’s 27–24 road win over Missouri, freshman wide receiver Derek Meadows was involved in one of the scariest moments of the game. Early in the first quarter, Ty Simpson threw a high seam pass intended for Meadows. As Meadows leapt to make the catch, Missouri safety Marvin Burks Jr. delivered a crushing hit. The contact, targeting Meadows’ head/helmet area, left him motionless on the turf.
Medical staff rushed in immediately. Coaches and trainers stabilized Meadows’ neck, assessed his limb movement, and worked cautiously before helping him off the field.
Because the hit was judged to be targeting, Burks Jr. was ejected from the game and Missouri was assessed the penalty.
Though Meadows managed to walk off the field under his own power (with assistance), he did not return to the game. He later appeared on the sidelines in street clothes, confirming he was officially done for the day.
After the game, head coach Kalen DeBoer confirmed that Meadows suffered a concussion. (
Injury Status and Future Outlook
On Wednesday during an SEC coaches teleconference, DeBoer provided an update:
“Yeah, I expect Derek will be out.”
He also added that Meadows (in addition to RB Jam Miller) will be going through the standard concussion protocol this week.
So, his availability for the upcoming game — especially Tennessee — appears doubtful.
Meadows has taken more snaps recently in the Alabama offense, though so far he has not recorded a reception this season.
With Meadows out, expect fellow freshman Lotzeir Brooks to see increased opportunities in the passing game.
