In a commanding display of rugby league, the Australia Women’s Prime Minister’s XIII blanked the Papua New Guinea Orchids 50-0 on Sunday at Santos National Football Stadium in Port Moresby.
From the opening whistle, the Australian side asserted control. Winger Phoenix-Raine Hippi struck early in the 8th minute after a beautifully timed cut-out pass from Kasey Reh, and quickly doubled down just minutes later, weaving through the Orchids’ defence to claim her second.
Caitlin Turnbull was equally impressive, scoring a hat-trick over the course of the match. She broke free in the first half, and then returned to finish strong in the second, contributing decisively to Australia’s ever-growing lead.
Other try scorers included Makenzie Weale, Quincy Dodd, Abbi Church, and Andie Robinson, who capped off the scoring with a long-range effort late in the game.
The match was also notable for the leadership and composure shown by veteran players. The likes of Kasey Reh, Kirra Dibb, and Quincy Dodd provided structure and experience, steering the younger players through the heavy conditions in Port Moresby.
Despite the margin, the PNG Orchids were not without their moments. They showed resilience in defence and had periods of energetic contest in the middle. However, errors and fatigue under the tropical humidity hampered their efforts.
For Australia, it was a statement performance ahead of the upcoming Pacific Championships, with several players likely to press for Jillaroos selection.
Coach Jess Skinner lauded her squad’s intensity and execution, saying the performance “reflects the depth and ambition we have in women’s league in Australia.” Meanwhile, PNG supporters, though disappointed by the scoreline, took pride in the event itself — the match continues to reinforce the growing pathway and visibility for women’s rugby league across the Pacific.
In summary, the Australia Women’s PM’s XIII delivered a near-flawless performance, combining pace, precision, and power to overwhelm Papua New Guinea and earn a resounding 50-nil victory.
