Major Shake-Up at Parramatta: Eels Set to Release Halfback Dean Hawkins Following Sensational Signing of Jonah Pezet from Melbourne Storm — English Super League Move Looms as Club Reshuffles Its Halves Ahead of 2026 Season”

In what’s shaping up to be a major shake-up for the Parramatta Eels’ playmaking ranks, reports suggest that halfback Dean Hawkins is set to be released from his contract following the club’s move to sign Melbourne Storm youngster Jonah Pezet. The development could mark the end of Hawkins’ short stint with the Eels, with a potential move to the English Super League now appearing increasingly likely.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Pezet has agreed to join the Eels on a one-year deal for the 2026 season, before heading north to link up with the Brisbane Broncos on a long-term contract beginning in 2027. The move was set in motion after Pezet activated a clause in his Melbourne deal, allowing him to explore other NRL opportunities following the Storm’s decision to re-sign Jahrome Hughes — effectively closing off any chance of him earning a permanent starting spot.

For Parramatta, Pezet’s arrival brings both excitement and uncertainty. The 22-year-old is widely regarded as one of the NRL’s most promising young playmakers, boasting strong game management and a composed kicking game that could complement Mitchell Moses perfectly in the halves. The signing, however, also means that the Eels’ depth chart has been shaken up, with Joash Papalii and Dean Hawkins suddenly finding themselves surplus to requirements.

Hawkins, who joined the club from South Sydney Rabbitohs earlier this year, still had a contract running through the end of 2026. Yet, sources close to the situation reveal that the Eels have granted him an early release, allowing the 26-year-old to pursue a multi-year deal in England starting in 2026. The specific club remains under wraps, but Hawkins is said to be in advanced talks with at least two Super League sides eager to secure his signature.

During the 2025 season, Hawkins proved to be a dependable option when called upon, featuring in 12 NRL games and filling in admirably for Moses during injuries and State of Origin absences. His professionalism and steady performances earned him respect within the Eels locker room, even as the team endured a turbulent campaign.

Now, as Parramatta reshapes its spine for the future, Hawkins looks set for a new challenge overseas — a move that could reignite his career and eventually pave the way for a return to the NRL spotlight. Meanwhile, all eyes will be on Pezet as the young halfback prepares to make his mark in blue and gold.
