Parramatta Forward Matt Dorey Shocks Club by Turning Down Contract Extension — Eels Face Key Off-Season Dilemma as Rebuild Under Jason Ryles Takes Another Twist Ahead of 2026 Campaign

Just a week before the November 1 deadline, the Parramatta Eels have been handed an unexpected blow in their squad planning. Promising forward Matt Dorey has reportedly rejected a contract extension from the club and will instead test his value on the open market — a decision that adds fresh uncertainty to the Eels’ ongoing rebuild under head coach Jason Ryles.

According to The Daily Telegraph, Dorey, who is off-contract at the end of the 2026 NRL season, informed Parramatta’s management that he would explore other opportunities rather than committing to a long-term stay in blue and gold. Despite being offered an improved deal to remain in Sydney’s west, the 25-year-old forward has chosen to keep his options open, signaling a major test of the Eels’ ability to retain key players during a crucial transition phase.

Dorey’s decision follows a series of squad shakeups that have already reshaped Parramatta’s roster. The club recently released Brendan Hands and Dean Hawkins from their contracts, moves seen as part of Ryles’ broader strategy to refresh his side and inject new energy into a team still chasing consistency after a turbulent 18 months.

Since joining from the Canterbury Bulldogs in 2023, Dorey has quietly become a valuable squad member for the Eels. Featuring in 31 NRL matches — including 17 appearances this season — he has impressed with his work rate, tackling commitment, and ability to play multiple roles in the forward pack. His departure, should it materialize, would leave a noticeable gap in the club’s depth and could prompt the Eels to accelerate recruitment efforts heading into the 2026 season.

Off the field, Parramatta’s management remains confident in their rebuild. The expected arrival of Jonah Pezet from the Melbourne Storm provides a boost to their playmaking options, while several emerging prospects are pushing for senior opportunities. Still, losing a player of Dorey’s versatility and experience could complicate Ryles’ vision of restoring the Eels to premiership contention — something the club hasn’t achieved since their Grand Final appearance in 2022.

As November 1 approaches, all eyes will be on how Parramatta responds. Will they fight to keep Dorey, or shift focus to new signings? Either way, this off-season promises to be one of the most pivotal yet in the Eels’ ambitious rebuild — and Matt Dorey’s decision has just made it a lot more interesting.
