BLOOMINGTON — In a stirring gathering that radiated Hoosier pride, the Indiana University Board of Trustees convened on Tuesday at the heart of campus to reflect on a banner year for the Indiana Hoosiers and the broader community of student-athletes, coaches and fans whose passion fuels the university’s athletic heartbeat.
Speaking before a packed assembly of athletic staff, alumni, and student-representatives, Board Chair Amy Yamanaka opened the session by declaring: “From Bloomington with love — this is a moment to honour our Hoosier Nation. What you have achieved this year across 24 programmes speaks not only to excellence on the field but to leadership in the classroom, character in the community, and the enduring spirit of Indiana University.”
The celebration comes on the back of an impressive year for IU Athletics, which earlier hosted the 2025 “Spirit of Indiana: Night of Excellence” event, recognising more than 600 student-athletes for their athletic, academic and service achievements. Among the honoured were standout performers such as senior swimmer Anna Peplowski, who made history by becoming the first female IU athlete to win the NCAA title in the 200 Freestyle, and men’s basketball guard Anthony Leal, whose five-year Hoosier career combined competition and scholarship in equal measure.
Board members emphasised that this year’s achievements are more than just records and scores: they represent the university’s commitment to the “whole student-athlete” — balancing competition, academics and service. The Board went on to spotlight recipients of the Big Ten Medal of Honor, including softball star Brianna Copeland and men’s swimmer Jassen Yep, underscoring that greatness at IU spans beyond the scoreboard.
In her remarks, Vice-President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Scott Dolson praised the Board for its “steadfast support” of student-athletes and noted that the momentum built during the 2025 season positions the Hoosiers for sustained success. “Our Hoosier Nation stretches globally,” he said, “and the foundation we’re cementing now is as much about character and community as it is competition.”
The Board’s gathering served multiple functions: a celebration of victory, a recommitment to IU values, and a launching pad for the next chapter. Several trustees spoke passionately about enhancing facilities, investing in academic support for athletes, and expanding outreach into under-represented communities — all with the aim of keeping the Hoosier tradition vibrant and inclusive.
Alumni leaders and student-athlete representatives also took the mic. One student spoke on behalf of the student-athlete body: “We’re proud to be Hoosiers. We’re proud to carry forward the legacy that started here in Bloomington. With your support, we’ll continue to raise the banner higher.” A trustee offered a closing message to the broader fan-base: “Hoosier Nation, this is your moment too. The energy you bring to events, your unwavering support — you make this campus hum. From Bloomington, with love.”
As the ceremony ended, there was a palpable sense of excitement in the room: pride for what has been accomplished, anticipation for what lies ahead, and togetherness in a community united under the Cream & Crimson banner. The 2025-season may be in the rear-view mirror, but the path forward for Indiana University athletics has never looked clearer — and it starts in Bloomington, with Love.
