In a candid and heartfelt interview, young Eels hooker Ryley Smith opened up about the pivotal role that coach Jason Ryles has played in his journey — crediting Ryles’ unwavering belief in him for helping unlock his best performances at Parramatta.
Smith, just 22, reflected on a transformative couple of years since joining the Blue & Gold. He revealed that much of his growth came when Ryles and the Parramatta coaching staff “put faith in me, which has been something that I feel I’ve needed for a few years.” (Parramatta Eels)
After spending most of 2024 in the Jersey Flegg competition, Smith faced long odds. He was on a train-and-trial deal during the 2025 pre-season — but Ryles saw something more. “Coming to Parra, I’ve felt that sort of sense of faith,” Smith said, explaining how even in lower grades the club encouraged him, made him captain in games, and entrusted him with responsibility. That trust paid off: Smith was promoted to the top-30 NRL squad in 2025, and even secured a contract extension through to the end of 2027. (Parramatta Eels) In his second year, he’s already started stepping into a leadership spot — particularly as other young players in the squad look up to him and lean on his experience. “I feel a little bit of a sense of responsibility,” he admitted, noting how gratifying it is to help bring through other youngsters who were in his shoes not long ago. Smith also praised the Eels’ fans, acknowledging how their warmth has made a real difference. “They’ve been unbelievable … there’s always just a Parra jersey around … it’s made my job so much easier,” he said. (Parramatta Eels)
Looking back, Smith also revealed that he once faced a tough choice between rugby league and cricket — having represented Australian Schoolboys in both sports. But he chose footy. (Zero Tackle) With Ryles now backing him, Smith believes he’s finally found the right place to grow and thrive.
“The journey is only just starting,” he said. “If I focus on doing my right things on the field, then the boys will follow.”
As the Eels build under Ryles’ leadership, Smith’s emergence is a powerful reminder: sometimes, all a young player needs is someone who believes — and that belief can change everything.
