LOMAX OUT, HOWARTH IN? NRL Trade Rumors Ignite as Eels Linked to Potential Backline Shake-Up.

The NRL rumor mill is spinning at full speed after a cryptic social media post from veteran league reporter Buzz Rothfield sparked fresh speculation around a potential three-way player movement that could reshape the backlines of multiple clubs in 2026. At the center of the chatter: Zac Lomax, Jack Howarth, Parramatta, and Melbourne.

According to the speculation gaining traction online, Lomax could be Melbourne-bound for the 2026 season, while highly rated young back Jack Howarth would head to the Parramatta Eels from 2026 onwards. While no club has confirmed discussions, the mere possibility has fans and analysts debating what could be one of the more intriguing positional swaps in recent memory.

For Parramatta, the proposed arrival of Howarth would represent a significant long-term investment. Still only in the early stages of his NRL career, Howarth is widely regarded as a player with enormous upside. His combination of size, athleticism, and football IQ makes him a natural fit for modern edge or outside back roles, and many talent scouts believe he has only scratched the surface of his potential.

Health, of course, remains the key variable. Injuries have slowed Howarth’s momentum at times, but when fit, his impact has been undeniable. For an Eels side looking to add strike, youth, and versatility to their backline, Howarth could be a perfect fit — particularly within a system that values strong carries, defensive discipline, and second-phase play.

The rumored departure of Lomax would mark a major shift as well. A proven NRL performer with representative experience, Lomax’s potential move to Melbourne would align with the Storm’s reputation for maximizing elite talent within their structured system. His athletic profile and finishing ability would make him a dangerous weapon under Craig Bellamy, should the move eventuate.

From a broader perspective, the suggested swap reflects the evolving NRL player market, where clubs are increasingly balancing immediate impact with long-term upside. Parramatta, in particular, has been vocal about building sustainably while remaining competitive — a philosophy that fits neatly with a player like Howarth.

At this stage, it’s important to stress that nothing has been confirmed. Clubs are remaining tight-lipped, and the speculation stems largely from cryptic commentary rather than official negotiations. Still, the fact that the idea is gaining momentum suggests conversations may at least be occurring behind the scenes.

If the deal were to become reality, many Eels fans would see it as a bold but calculated win — a move that prioritizes future potential while addressing key roster needs.

For now, it remains one of the offseason’s most intriguing “what ifs.” But as NRL history has shown time and again, today’s rumor can quickly become tomorrow’s headline. 💙💛 #Eels4Life
