New Zealand Rugby has officially celebrated another year of outstanding excellence, and the spotlight shone brightly on rising star Braxton Sorensen-McGee, who was crowned Black Ferns Player of the Year at the 2025 New Zealand Rugby Awards. The prestigious honour highlights her remarkable impact, consistency, and leadership throughout a thrilling season for the national women’s team.

Sorensen-McGee’s performances in 2025 have been nothing short of exceptional. A dynamic force on the field, she delivered standout displays in the Pacific Four Series, Rugby Championship, and the highly competitive Test calendar that stretched across Europe and Australia. Her ability to dominate collisions, control pace, and inspire teammates made her a central figure in the Black Ferns’ game plan. Coaches and analysts praised her unmatched work rate, defensive strength, and ability to turn tight contests in New Zealand’s favour.

The award comes during a period of growth and transition for the Black Ferns, who continue to develop depth after the 2022 Rugby World Cup triumph and subsequent years of squad regeneration. Sorensen-McGee not only rose to the occasion but emerged as one of the most influential players in the squad. Her leadership on and off the pitch has also been recognised as a key part of the team’s culture and cohesion.

During the ceremony held in Auckland, New Zealand Rugby officials highlighted her discipline, consistency, and resilience, noting that she represented the values and spirit of the Black Ferns with pride. Sorensen-McGee expressed gratitude to her coaches, teammates, family, and supporters, saying the award was a reflection of collective effort and the passion that drives women’s rugby in Aotearoa.

Her recognition comes at an important time for women’s rugby, with participation numbers growing and international competitions gaining global attention. The Black Ferns’ success and the rise of players like Sorensen-McGee continue to inspire young girls across the country, reinforcing New Zealand’s legacy as a powerhouse in the women’s game.

As the team begins preparations for the upcoming international season, Sorensen-McGee’s award sets the tone for what promises to be another competitive year. With her exceptional abilities and relentless drive, she is expected to remain a cornerstone of the Black Ferns lineup and a key figure in New Zealand Rugby’s pursuit of continued excellence.
