On this day, ten years ago, the world of rugby stood still as Jonah Lomu, one of the greatest athletes the sport has ever known, passed away at the age of 40. Born 12 May 1975 and departing this world on 18 November 2015, Lomu’s life may have been short, but his impact was eternal.

Jonah Lomu was not just an All Black — he was rugby’s first true global superstar. At a time when the game was still transitioning into professionalism, Lomu transcended borders, cultures, and even the sport itself. His name became synonymous with power, speed, and fearlessness, inspiring millions who had never watched rugby before.

A prodigy from Wesley College, Lomu burst onto the international stage at just 19 years and 45 days, becoming the youngest All Black test player in history. Even at that tender age, it was clear the game had never seen anything like him. Standing 6’5” with the speed of a winger and the strength of a forward, Lomu redefined what was physically possible on a rugby field.

His performances at the 1995 Rugby World Cup announced him to the world. Defenders bounced off him, tactics failed to contain him, and crowds watched in disbelief as he bulldozed his way into rugby folklore. He repeated that dominance in 1999, with both World Cup campaigns representing the peak of his All Black career. In those two tournaments alone, Lomu scored over half of his All Black tries, leaving an indelible mark on rugby’s biggest stage.

Between 1994 and 2002, Jonah Lomu wore the famous black jersey for eight remarkable years. He played 73 matches, including 63 test appearances, scoring 43 tries, with 37 coming at test level — numbers that tell only part of the story. His influence went far beyond statistics.

Despite battling serious health challenges throughout his career, Lomu never complained. Instead, he inspired with courage, humility, and resilience. Off the field, he was gentle and gracious; on it, he was unstoppable.

Today, a decade after his passing, Jonah Lomu remains larger than life. His legacy lives on in every powerful winger, every young player who dares to dream big, and every fan who fell in love with rugby because of him.

Rest in love and peace, Jonah.
Forever an All Black. Forever a legend. ♥♥
