The Penrith Panthers have paid tribute to one of their premiership pioneers, officially naming Col Bentley an Honorary Life Member of the club.
The announcement was confirmed at the 2025 Annual General Meeting of the Penrith District Rugby League Football Club, recognising Bentley’s immense contribution both on and off the field across decades of service.
Panther No. 252, Bentley etched his name into club history through 114 first-grade appearances after debuting in 1986. A tough, defensively reliable centre, he quickly established himself as a cornerstone of the side during a transformative era for the club.
Bentley was instrumental in Penrith’s rise to prominence, playing a key role when the Panthers reached their first-ever Grand Final in 1990. Just one year later, he was part of the history-making 1991 squad that delivered the club’s maiden premiership — a triumph that laid the foundation for the powerhouse Penrith would eventually become.
His career also included a brief stint with Manly between 1993 and 1994, but Bentley’s heart remained in the west. He returned to Penrith for his final season in 1995, closing the chapter on a proud playing career where grit, loyalty and professionalism defined his legacy.
Bentley’s impact, however, extended far beyond match day.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he contributed significantly behind the scenes in sponsorship and marketing roles, helping strengthen the club’s commercial growth during critical developmental years. His dedication to Penrith continued after retirement when he served on the board of the Penrith District Rugby League Football Club from 2002 to 2008, offering leadership and guidance at an administrative level.
The Honorary Life Membership recognises not just a premiership-winning player, but a lifelong Panther whose service spans generations.
As Penrith celebrates its 60th season and reflects on the figures who shaped its journey, Bentley’s elevation stands as a reminder of the club’s proud heritage — built on loyalty, resilience and unwavering commitment.
From first-grade centre to board member, from premiership hero to Life Member, Col Bentley’s story is woven into the fabric of the Panthers.
A champion in 1991. A leader beyond retirement. And now, forever honoured as a Life Member of the mighty Panthers. 🖤💚💛
