Bundesliga battle begins: six clubs are chasing Swiss wonder coach Mauro Lustrinelli

The Bundesliga’s managerial carousel is spinning again, and this time a Swiss name is at the center of it. Mauro Lustrinelli, the 49-year-old coach who led FC Thun back to the Swiss Super League and guided them to the title in their first season back, has become one of the most talked-about candidates in Germany.

According to reports from Sky Sport, several Bundesliga clubs have already gathered information on the Thun coach. While no offers have been confirmed, the interest reflects how quickly Lustrinelli has built a reputation for developing young players and implementing an aggressive, possession-based style that travels well.

From Thun to the Bundesliga radar

Lustrinelli is not an overnight sensation. A former Swiss international who played at the 2006 World Cup and scored 149 goals in a 11-year playing career, he transitioned into coaching at FC Thun in 2013. After stints with Switzerland’s U16 and U21 sides, where he recorded 20 wins in 30 matches, he returned to Thun as head coach in 2022.

His first task was promotion. He delivered it. In 2024/25, Thun came back to the Super League, and in 2025/26 they stunned the league by winning the title as a promoted side. That achievement put him on the map far beyond Switzerland.

Sky Sport reported that “several Bundesliga clubs have already obtained information about the champion coach.” The Ticino coach’s offensive approach and his knack for developing young talent have attracted attention.

Lustrinelli himself has stayed calm about the speculation. In interviews this spring he emphasized process over results: “The important thing is that we bring our playing principles and our potential onto the pitch. And if the other teams don’t necessarily do that, let’s see where we are.”

    Why Bundesliga clubs are interested

The Bundesliga has a history of giving chances to coaches from smaller leagues who show tactical clarity and player development skills. Xabi Alonso came from Leverkusen’s youth setup, Urs Fischer built Union Berlin from the second division, and Adi Hütter made his name at Young Boys before moving to Germany.

Lustrinelli fits that profile. At Thun, he rebuilt a squad on a tight budget, blending experienced players with academy graduates. His teams press high, play out from the back, and show flexibility between a 4-3-3 and a 3-4-3 depending on the opponent. More importantly, they play with intensity for 90 minutes, something Thun’s sporting director Dominik Albrecht attributes to the “blind understanding” between coach and sporting staff.

That structure matters to Bundesliga clubs looking for stability. With coaching changes at Leverkusen, Frankfurt, and Wolfsburg in the last 12 months, sporting directors are searching for managers who can implement an identity quickly without needing a €100m squad.

    Which clubs could move?

The reports don’t name the six clubs, but the context points to mid-table and lower-half sides looking for a reset. Teams that have underperformed, face budget constraints, or want to shift toward a younger squad are the most likely candidates.

Mainz, Wolfsburg, and Heidenheim have all had coaching uncertainty this season. Freiburg and St. Pauli, who finished mid-table in 2025/26, have reputations for hiring coaches who prioritize development over short-term fixes. And a club like Augsburg or Bochum, fighting relegation battles regularly, could see Lustrinelli as a coach who overachieves with limited resources.

What works in Lustrinelli’s favor is his multilingual background and experience in Swiss, German-speaking football culture. He speaks German, Italian, and English, making the transition to the Bundesliga smoother than for many foreign coaches.

    The risks and the reward

Moving from Thun to the Bundesliga is a big step. The pressure, media scrutiny, and squad demands are different. But Lustrinelli has already managed that jump once, taking Thun from the Challenge League to champions in two seasons.

For the Bundesliga, hiring him would be a bet on process over profile. It’s the same bet that worked with Fischer at Union and Hütter at Frankfurt. If it pays off, Lustrinelli could become the next Swiss coach to make a name in Germany after Lucien Favre and Urs Fischer.

For now, it’s a battle of information gathering. No club has made a formal approach, and Lustrinelli remains under contract at Thun. But the fact that six Bundesliga sides are reportedly monitoring him shows that German football is looking beyond the usual names.

As the summer approaches, the question isn’t just whether Lustrinelli leaves Thun. It’s whether the Bundesliga is ready for a coach who has made a habit of turning underdogs into contenders.
