Away Fan Derby Lockout Caused by One Club – And It’s Certainly Not Celtic

The latest controversy surrounding the derby has once again placed away-fan access firmly in the spotlight, with supporters left frustrated by the prospect of another fixture being played without a normal allocation for travelling fans.

For many supporters, derby day is about much more than the 90 minutes on the pitch. It is about tradition, atmosphere, rivalry and the unique experience of thousands of supporters travelling across the country to back their team. That is why any decision to restrict or remove an away allocation is likely to generate a strong reaction.

The headline claim that one club is responsible for the current situation, rather than Celtic, has added another layer to an already sensitive debate. However, responsibility for such arrangements can be complicated, involving clubs, police, football authorities, stadium operators and discussions over safety and crowd management.

Celtic supporters will understandably be keen to make their position clear. The club has a huge travelling support, and away matches have traditionally formed an important part of the Scottish football experience. When those supporters are prevented from attending a major derby, questions naturally follow about why the decision was made and who ultimately requested it.

The issue becomes even more controversial when rival supporters believe that one side has played a greater role in determining the arrangements. Such claims can quickly spread across social media, where frustration can turn into accusations before all the relevant information has been established.

What cannot be disputed is the importance of finding a solution that protects supporters while preserving the atmosphere and traditions that make Scottish football distinctive.

There is also a wider issue at stake. Away fans are an essential part of football culture. Their songs, colours and presence contribute to the identity of major fixtures. Removing them may make logistical and security arrangements easier, but it can also diminish the spectacle and leave supporters feeling that their voice has been ignored.

For the clubs involved, the priority should therefore be transparency. If restrictions are necessary, supporters deserve to understand why. If negotiations have broken down, the reasons should be communicated clearly. And if another organisation has influenced the decision, that should be explained rather than allowing speculation to dominate the conversation.

Celtic fans, meanwhile, will be hoping that the situation does not become another chapter in the long-running arguments surrounding Scottish football’s biggest fixtures. Rivalry is expected, but supporters should not become collateral damage in disputes between institutions.

Ultimately, the derby should be decided on the pitch rather than through arguments over who gets to enter the stadium. Whatever the reason behind the current away-fan restrictions, the strongest outcome would be a transparent agreement that allows both sets of supporters to participate safely.

Until that happens, however, the controversy is unlikely to disappear. And with derby day carrying enormous emotional significance, the debate over away supporters could prove almost as intense as the action itself.
