Leeds United Take Early Lead Against Chelsea in Carabao Cup Clash
Leeds United have taken an early advantage against Chelsea in their Carabao Cup third-round clash at Stamford Bridge, with the visitors leading 1–0 after a closely contested opening period.
The match, which was delayed by 15 minutes because of disruption on London’s rail network, eventually got underway with both sides making significant changes to their starting line-ups. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso made nine changes from the team that faced Arsenal, while Leeds boss Daniel Farke also rotated his squad heavily.
Chelsea handed a full debut to 16-year-old Reggie Watson, who became one of the youngest players to start for the club. The teenager was given an opportunity to impress in midfield as Alonso looked to give several squad players valuable minutes.
Leeds, however, made the breakthrough in the 23rd minute. A dangerous corner was delivered towards the back post, where defender Muharemovic rose above the Chelsea defence and directed a header into the far side of the net.
The goal immediately increased the pressure on Chelsea, who have struggled to create clear opportunities despite enjoying spells of possession. Leeds have looked organised and confident, particularly when defending set pieces and attempting to exploit space on the counterattack.
Chelsea entered the game hoping to progress after defeating Luton Town 2–0 in the previous round, while Leeds had also advanced with a 2–0 victory over Nottingham Forest.
With the tie still finely balanced, Chelsea will need a stronger attacking response if they are to avoid an early Carabao Cup exit. Leeds, meanwhile, will be encouraged by their disciplined performance and will look to protect their advantage as the match progresses.
