The No. 2 Alabama men’s basketball team defeated the Memphis Tigers 96-88 in the 2024 Rocket City Classic charity exhibition, but the game was far from flawless. This final preseason scrimmage revealed both strengths and areas for improvement before Alabama’s regular season opener against UNC Asheville on Nov. 4.
1. Alabama’s High-Speed Offense May Need Adjusting
Known for their lightning-fast play, Alabama’s offense led the nation in scoring last season, largely due to its three-point shooting. Against Memphis, however, the pace may have backfired, leading to 20 turnovers and giving Memphis opportunities for 25 points off turnovers and 36 fast-break points. Alabama head coach Nate Oats acknowledged that the team’s speed exposed weaknesses, particularly in ball security and transition defense. Despite the turnovers, the pace contributed to Alabama scoring 96 points, exceeding last season’s average.
2. Defensive Discipline Needs Improvement
Both Alabama and Memphis struggled with fouls, resulting in a staggering 96 free throw attempts. Alabama went 30-of-48 from the line, while Memphis made 29 of their 48 attempts. The Crimson Tide’s inability to defend without fouling was apparent, with Memphis frequently getting to the line and capitalizing on offensive rebounds for second-chance points. Oats expressed frustration with Alabama’s defensive rebounding and inability to handle Memphis’s physicality, especially during a lackluster second half.
3. Promising Depth in Alabama’s Lineup
Alabama’s guard depth looks strong, with Mark Sears and freshman Labaron Philon combining for 37 points and 11 assists, along with Houston Mallette’s solid shooting from beyond the arc. Even with injuries sidelining guards Latrell Wrightsell Jr. and Chris Youngblood, Alabama’s depth was evident. Among the forwards, Mo Dioubate and Jarin Stevenson contributed effectively in scoring and rebounding, showing promise despite the absence of Grant Nelson and Aiden Sherrell. Oats emphasized the importance of building experience and chemistry for Alabama’s new players ahead of the regular season.
Overall, Alabama displayed offensive potential but needs to address turnovers, defensive discipline, and rebounding to compete effectively in the upcoming season.
