Florida State football is in “win-now” mode after a disastrous 2024 season, which ended with a 2-10 record. With mounting pressure on head coach Mike Norvell to deliver in 2025, the university has supported his efforts to rebuild the program after the turmoil of previous years. While fans initially lacked hope, Norvell’s decision to overhaul the coaching staff—bringing in Gus Malzahn as offensive coordinator, Tony White as defensive coordinator, and several key assistant coaches—has sparked renewed optimism.
Florida State’s 2025 recruiting class finished with the 20th-best ranking, according to 247Sports Composite, which many saw as a success given the challenges faced. The coaching staff is now focusing on the transfer portal to add talent to a roster that is in need of significant improvement. Despite some past disappointment with transfers, FSU will be aggressive in securing top-tier talent.
Two important transfer prospects are set to officially visit Florida State in the coming days: Boston College quarterback Thomas Castellanos and Nebraska defensive end James Williams. Castellanos, though controversial due to his previous departure from Boston College and concerns about his height (5’10”), is a dynamic dual-threat quarterback who could provide FSU with much-needed playmaking ability. Williams, a strong pass rusher, is familiar with Tony White’s defensive scheme from his time at Nebraska and has been a consistent producer with 18 tackles, including 7 sacks, in 16 career games.
The transfer portal will be crucial for FSU’s success as they aim to flip their roster and strengthen the team heading into spring practices.
