The Oklahoma Sooners men’s basketball program just got a major boost with the addition of former star Trae Young in a new front-office role. On Monday, Young was officially named assistant general manager for OU men’s basketball, a move that signals his commitment to elevating his alma mater to new heights.
In addition to taking on a strategic role in roster management and player branding, Young also made a substantial financial commitment by donating $1 million to the program. This contribution is expected to make an immediate impact in the name, image, and likeness (NIL) space, a crucial area as head coach Porter Moser looks to build a competitive roster through high school recruiting and the transfer portal.
According to the university, Young’s responsibilities will include evaluating prospects, assisting with contract negotiations, and helping student-athletes maximize their marketability. He will also play a key role in fundraising efforts to generate more financial support for the Sooners.
“Trae is a son of Norman, Oklahoma, and he’s given so much to our city and its people,” said OU athletic director Joe Castiglione. “He’s an OU legend who continues to achieve excellence both on and off the court. With this appointment, we’re taking his commitment to Norman and to OU to the next level.”
This move comes at a critical time for the Sooners, who are aiming to strengthen their roster after an early exit from the 2025 NCAA Tournament. Moser has emphasized the importance of financial backing in the NIL era, stating that winning in March requires winning battles in April when securing top talent from the transfer portal.
Young’s presence in the program adds a unique advantage. As a four-time NBA All-Star at just 26 years old, he brings credibility and influence that few coaches or administrators can match. His involvement in recruiting efforts could be a game-changer, as young players will likely be drawn to the opportunity to work closely with an NBA superstar.
While Young’s role differs from that of Jim Nagy, OU football’s newly hired general manager, his impact could be even greater. His financial contribution, combined with his ability to connect with top prospects, makes this move a major win for the Sooners.
With Young on board, Oklahoma men’s basketball is poised to take a significant step forward. The program has yet to land a transfer portal addition this offseason, but Young’s hiring could be their most important acquisition before next season.
