Malachi Moreno is already making waves before even stepping foot on the University of Kentucky campus, and his upcoming freshman season under head coach Mark Pope is generating plenty of buzz. The seven-foot basketball phenom is wrapping up his high school career on a high note and is excited to raise the bar in the Wildcats’ program during Pope’s second season.
Moreno has just capped off an incredible high school career by leading Great Crossing to its first-ever state title in Kentucky, finishing the championship game with a stellar 24 points, 15 rebounds, three blocks, and two assists in a dominating 71-61 victory over Bowling Green. His performance on the national stage was equally impressive, as he recently participated in the prestigious McDonald’s All-American Game. Despite arriving late due to his high school commitments, Moreno immediately showcased his skills, earning recognition as the second-best performer during the scrimmage by On3’s Jamie Shaw.
Now, as he turns his attention to Kentucky, the expectations for the freshman are sky-high. With Mark Pope having led the Wildcats to an impressive Sweet 16 appearance in his debut season, the bar is raised even higher for 2025-26. Moreno is eager to contribute to what looks like another successful campaign for the Wildcats, one that could elevate the program back to national prominence.
“I think Coach Pope did an amazing job last season, and it shows that we’re going to take things to the next level this year,” Moreno said. “We’re going to come in, work hard, win a lot, and make some noise like he did this year. It’s going to be a completely different season, but we’re ready for the challenge.”
Moreno’s confidence is palpable, and his arrival is much anticipated by the Wildcat faithful. Alongside other top recruits like Jasper Johnson and Acaden Lewis, Moreno will play a pivotal role in continuing the momentum created by Pope’s first season. The chemistry between him and fellow Kentucky native Jasper Johnson will be a storyline to watch, as the two have competed against each other throughout their high school careers and are now set to team up for the Wildcats.
As the excitement builds for what’s to come, Kentucky fans can’t help but feel the optimism surrounding this talented group of players, with Moreno’s presence signaling a new era of Wildcat basketball. The future is indeed bright, and Kentucky’s next chapter under Mark Pope could be something truly special.
