The Florida Gators completed a stunning 79-73 comeback victory over the top-seeded Auburn Tigers in the national semifinals on April 5, 2025, moving one win away from their third national title. Trailing by eight points at halftime, Florida mounted a second-half rally to take control, eventually securing the win in the final moments. Florida’s victory marked the second time this season the Gators defeated Auburn, as they also triumphed 90-81 during the regular season.
Senior All-American guard Walter Clayton was the standout player, leading Florida with 34 points, including five 3-pointers. Senior guard Alijah Martin contributed 17 points, while sophomore forward Thomas Haugh came off the bench to score 12 points and grab seven rebounds. Clayton’s performance was pivotal, with Florida head coach Todd Golden praising his ability to make crucial shots and calm the team during tense moments.
Auburn had a strong start, with the Tigers dominating inside, led by SEC Player of the Year Johni Broome, who finished the first half with 12 points, four rebounds, and two blocks. Auburn shot 51.5% from the field and led 46-38 at halftime, while Florida struggled, especially inside, where they were outscored 26-14. Clayton and Martin kept the Gators in the game with 14 and 10 points, respectively, but the team shot just 44.4% in the opening half.
In the second half, Florida surged with a 13-3 run, gaining control of the game. Broome, who was a key factor in the first half, was limited to just three points in the second half, allowing Florida to outplay Auburn and take an eight-point lead down the stretch. The Tigers couldn’t recover, and Florida held on for the win.
With a 35-4 record, Florida will face either Duke or Houston in the national championship game, aiming to capture the program’s third title after previous victories in 2006 and 2007. The Gators’ resilience and teamwork were on full display in this thrilling semifinal victory.
