In a monumental achievement, Tony Caridi, the celebrated voice behind West Virginia University’s Mountaineers, has claimed dual ESPN Awards for Excellence in Sports Broadcasting. This landmark recognition cements Caridi’s status as one of the most distinguished voices in collegiate sports, resonating far beyond the bounds of Morgantown, West Virginia.

    Honored for Excellence

Caridi’s two accolades—Best Live Sports Commentary and Outstanding Contribution to College Sports Broadcasting—recognize his decades of dedication to the art of sports storytelling. The awards were presented during ESPN’s prestigious annual Sports Broadcasting Gala, a celebration of the industry’s most influential figures.

The Best Live Sports Commentary award specifically acknowledged Caridi’s masterful narration of WVU’s electrifying double-overtime football victory against Baylor during the 2024 season. Judges highlighted his ability to immerse listeners in the action, balancing expert analysis with an emotive delivery that captured the spirit of the moment.

The Outstanding Contribution to College Sports Broadcasting honor underscores Caridi’s enduring legacy. Beyond his exceptional calls, he has mentored aspiring broadcasters, fostered innovation in sports media, and amplified the visibility of college athletics on a national scale.

    The Journey of a Legend

Caridi’s career began at Syracuse University, where he honed his skills at the renowned WAER student radio station. After graduating in 1984, he joined WVU Athletics and quickly became a household name. By 1996, Caridi had taken on the role of lead broadcaster for Mountaineer Sports Network, filling the shoes of the legendary Jack Fleming.

Since then, Caridi has been the voice behind some of WVU’s most iconic moments, including the 2006 Sugar Bowl win over Georgia and the 2010 NCAA basketball triumph over Kentucky. His famous catchphrase, “It’s a great night to be a Mountaineer, wherever you may be!”, is a rallying cry for WVU fans worldwide.

    A Broadcaster with Heart

Caridi’s contributions transcend the broadcast booth. He co-founded WVRC Video, an Emmy-winning production company, and authored a beloved children’s book. His efforts to engage with the community, whether through storytelling or mentorship, reflect his deep commitment to making a difference.

    A Legacy of Inspiration

Accepting the awards, Caridi expressed gratitude for his journey. “This honor is not mine alone—it belongs to every fan, athlete, and colleague who has been part of this incredible ride,” he said.

With this recognition, Tony Caridi’s voice now echoes as a symbol of excellence, inspiration, and the unifying power of sports. He’s not just the voice of the Mountaineers—he’s the voice of the nation.
