Jon Richt, son of former University of Georgia and Miami head coach Mark Richt, has been appointed as the new head varsity football coach at Prince Avenue Christian School in Bogart, Georgia. The announcement, made in February 2025, marks a homecoming for the 34-year-old, who is a 2008 graduate of Prince Avenue and a former quarterback for the school’s early football teams .
Richt steps into the role following the resignation of Greg Vandagriff, who led the Wolverines to a remarkable 107-16 record over nine seasons, including three state championships and six region titles . Vandagriff’s departure came after the 2024 season, in which Prince Avenue reached the Class 3A-A private championship game but fell to Hebron Christian 56-28 .
Athletic Director Richard Ricketts expressed confidence in Richt’s appointment, stating, “We are confident Coach Richt’s extensive experience, passion for football, spiritual maturity, and deep-rooted connection to Prince will inspire our student-athletes to achieve new heights as we transition to an exciting new chapter for our football program” .
Richt’s coaching journey began as a quality control assistant at the University of Georgia in 2014, followed by a stint with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills as an offensive assistant in 2015. He then served as the quarterbacks coach at the University of Miami from 2016 to 2018 under his father, Mark Richt .
In 2021, Richt returned to his alma mater as the offensive coordinator, playing a pivotal role in the team’s success. Under his guidance, the Wolverines secured back-to-back state championships in 2022 and 2023, with standout performances from quarterback Aaron Philo, who set a state record with 13,922 career passing yards .
Beyond his professional achievements, Richt’s personal connection to Prince Avenue Christian School adds depth to his new role. Having been part of the school’s foundational football teams, his return as head coach symbolizes a full-circle moment, blending tradition with a forward-looking vision for the program’s future .
As the Wolverines prepare for the upcoming season, the community anticipates continued excellence under Richt’s leadership, building upon the strong foundation laid by his predecessor and aiming for new heights in Georgia high school football.
