West Virginia University Baseball Overall Catcher Withdraws From MLB Draft, Returns To Mountaineers

    — In a surprise twist on Feb. 12, 2025, West Virginia University starting catcher Logan Sauve officially removed his name from consideration in the MLB Draft and announced his return to the Mountaineers for the upcoming season . Originally eligible for the 2024 draft, Sauve had dipped his toes in the waters but ultimately chose to continue his collegiate career .

“My dream has always been to play in Omaha and to play in the MLB,” Sauve shared via social media. “I’m taking my name out of the draft so I can chase my dream of helping take WVU Baseball to Omaha.” He went on: “We are building something special in Morgantown. I look forward to playing for this state and university.”

Sauve enters his third season behind the plate at West Virginia after posting an exceptional 2024 campaign. In 45 games, he recorded a .308 batting average, belted eight home runs, scored 42 runs, and tallied 37 RBIs . His steady production and leadership made him a valuable asset—and likely a key piece in head coach Steve Sabins’s plan for the 2025 season.

Sauve’s decision not only marks a personal turning point but also speaks volumes about the program’s upward trajectory. The Mountaineers, fresh off a franchise-best 44–16 overall record and a strong showing in the NCAA Baton Rouge Super Regional, captured the Big 12 regular-season title under first-year head coach Sabins. Losing players to the draft—like 2024’s top pick JJ Wetherholt—was expected, but retaining Sauve keeps a core piece intact .

Sauve’s return comes amid significant turnover in the Mountaineers’ roster. With the pitching staff and field positions seeing departures—some due to eligibility, others to pro ambitions—Sauve’s presence behind the plate provides continuity, both defensively and in handling the pitching rotation. WVU fans and coaching staff alike have praised his game-calling, reliability, and evolving bat—a complete package that benefits the team in all facets.

Looking ahead, Sauve has one clear goal: lead WVU to the College World Series in Omaha. With expectations running high after their Super Regional exit, West Virginia is positioning itself not just as a Big‑12 contender but as a national threat. And Sauve, committed to another year of Mountaineer baseball, embodies that ambition.

As spring training nears, teammates, coaches, and fans are rallying behind Sauve’s bold decision. With his bat, glove, and vocal leadership back in Morgantown, the Mountaineers are more than ready to make a serious run in 2025.
