    — Netflix has officially announced the release of its newest sports documentary, The Underdog, a powerful and intimate look into the life and career of West Virginia University football icon, Pat White. Slated to premiere later this summer, the film explores White’s transformation from an under-the-radar high school recruit to one of college football’s most electrifying and accomplished quarterbacks.

Produced by Emmy-winning sports documentarian Jason Roth and executive produced by Netflix Sports, The Underdog offers fans a never-before-seen glimpse into the heart and grit of a player who redefined the expectations for dual-threat quarterbacks. The documentary features exclusive interviews with White, former teammates, coaches, and sports analysts, along with archival game footage and behind-the-scenes moments from his standout collegiate career.

Pat White, a native of Daphne, Alabama, joined WVU in 2004 with little fanfare compared to other top-ranked quarterbacks. But his impact on the program was immediate. By the end of his college career, White had become the NCAA’s all-time winningest quarterback in bowl games, guiding the Mountaineers to four consecutive bowl victories, including the 2006 Sugar Bowl and the 2008 Fiesta Bowl. Known for his unmatched speed, poise under pressure, and leadership on and off the field, White played a central role in elevating the WVU football program to national prominence.

The documentary also touches on the challenges White faced—ranging from questions about his size and playing style to doubts about his NFL future. His brief professional stints with the Miami Dolphins and in minor league baseball are covered, alongside his transition into coaching and mentoring young athletes. White’s resilience and quiet determination form the emotional core of the film.

“Pat’s story isn’t just about football,” said Roth. “It’s about perseverance, believing in yourself when no one else does, and the impact one individual can have on an entire community.”

The Underdog is already generating significant buzz in Morgantown and beyond, with WVU fans eagerly anticipating a film that celebrates not just a football legend, but a beloved figure who embodied Mountaineer pride. The premiere is expected to take place in late July, with a red carpet event scheduled in Morgantown.

Netflix subscribers worldwide will be able to stream the documentary following the premiere.
