— In a move that has sent waves of excitement throughout the college softball community, former Oklahoma pitching star Nicole May has been officially named the Associate Head Coach of the Oklahoma Sooners Softball program. The announcement marks an emotional and monumental homecoming for May, who played a pivotal role in the Sooners’ national championship runs during her collegiate career.
University of Oklahoma Athletic Director Joe Castiglione confirmed the appointment in a press release Saturday morning, calling May “a brilliant softball mind and a true Sooner at heart.”
“Nicole brings elite-level playing experience, unmatched passion, and a deep understanding of the culture we’ve built here,” said Head Coach Patty Gasso. “To have one of our own return in this capacity is incredibly special. She’s been preparing for this moment, and now, the next generation of Sooners will benefit from her leadership.”
May, who graduated from OU in 2024, spent the past year as a pitching coach at a Power Five program, where she earned national praise for her ability to develop young talent and improve team ERA significantly. Her return to Norman is not just a professional step up — it’s a homecoming to a place that helped define her legacy.
“I’m overwhelmed with gratitude,” May said during her introductory press conference. “Oklahoma shaped me as an athlete and a person. To now return and help carry the torch alongside Coach Gasso is a dream come true.”
Known for her fierce competitiveness and calm presence in the circle, May was a fan favorite during her time at OU. She helped lead the team to multiple Women’s College World Series titles, earning All-Big 12 and All-American honors along the way.
In her new role, May will oversee pitcher development, recruitment efforts, and game-day strategy, working closely with Gasso and the rest of the coaching staff to maintain the Sooners’ dominance in NCAA softball.
With a blend of youthful energy and championship pedigree, Nicole May’s return signals a new era of continuity and innovation for the program.
“It feels like destiny,” May said with a smile. “I’m back home, and I’m ready to win.”
The Sooners open their 2026 season next February, and with May on staff, expectations are already soaring.
