EAST LANSING, MI – July 3, 2025 — In a heartfelt act of generosity that is being hailed as one of the most meaningful contributions in Michigan State University’s athletic history, Spartan basketball legend Greg Kelser has donated his entire $12.2 million estate to launch a state-of-the-art basketball court project on campus — a powerful symbol of his lifelong commitment to Spartan excellence.

Kelser, who starred alongside Magic Johnson on the iconic 1979 NCAA Championship team, made the announcement at a special press conference held at the Breslin Center, where university officials, former teammates, and current student-athletes gathered to celebrate a man who continues to shape MSU’s legacy both on and off the court.

Honoring the Past, Investing in the Future

The new facility — officially titled the Greg Kelser Court of Champions — will feature elite hardwood surfaces, advanced shooting labs, mental performance suites, and a “Legacy Hall” to honor past Spartan greats. It will also serve as a central training hub for both the men’s and women’s basketball teams, while offering community access programs for youth development and outreach.

“I’ve been a Spartan all my life,” Kelser said, voice filled with emotion. “This university gave me the chance to grow, to win, and to dream. I’m giving this gift so that generations of Spartans can continue to do the same — not just to win games, but to become great people.”

    A Gift that Transcends Generations

The $12.2 million donation — which includes the full value of Kelser’s estate and future royalties — is the largest single-player gift in MSU basketball history. According to Athletic Director Alan Haller, the project will be completed by late 2026 and will “redefine how we train, recruit, and inspire.”

“Greg Kelser is the definition of what it means to be a Spartan,” said MSU Head Coach Tom Izzo. “He’s a champion on the court and now a champion of future generations.”

A Legacy of Love for Michigan State

Kelser, now a respected broadcaster and motivational speaker, has always maintained close ties with MSU. This gift cements his status not just as a Spartan legend, but as a foundational pillar of the university’s enduring success.

Because in East Lansing, greatness isn’t just remembered — it’s paid forward. 💚
