— The Michigan State community is brimming with pride as Josh DeVries, standout athlete and exemplary student-leader, has been named the recipient of the prestigious Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award. The honor, announced Friday afternoon, recognizes DeVries not only for his performance on the field but, more importantly, for the values he exemplifies off it — integrity, humility, resilience, and leadership.
A senior linebacker for the Spartans, DeVries has consistently led by example. Whether it’s guiding underclassmen through tough practices, rallying the team after a tough loss, or showing unmatched respect to opponents, Josh has remained the embodiment of what it means to be a Spartan. Coaches, teammates, and fans alike speak glowingly of his character — and now, the Big Ten Conference has echoed their praise.
“Josh DeVries is the kind of student-athlete every program hopes for,” said Head Coach Jonathan Tucker. “He’s the heart of our locker room. His sportsmanship is matched only by his work ethic and humility. This award is not just a win for Josh, but for all of Spartan Nation.”
DeVries has been a consistent presence on and off the field. Despite battling injuries during his sophomore season, he never missed a team meeting, spent hours mentoring incoming freshmen, and organized community volunteer events. His comeback story, culminating in a career-high tackle season this year, has inspired both teammates and fans alike.
