— In a heartfelt move reflecting both compassion and leadership off the court, Michigan State Basketball Head Coach Tom Izzo has invested $3.6 million of his own money to transform a local residential property into a shelter for homeless youth. Amid increasing concerns over the rise in youth homelessness across Michigan, Izzo’s initiative aims to offer stability, safety, and hope to some of the state’s most vulnerable residents.
The shelter, expected to open later this year, will provide not only temporary housing but also counseling, educational resources, and job training support for teens and young adults struggling with homelessness. “It’s not just about putting a roof over someone’s head,” Izzo said during a press conference. “It’s about giving young people a chance at a better future — one filled with dignity, opportunity, and care.”
Local leaders have praised the effort as both timely and transformative. “Tom Izzo’s leadership is legendary on the court, but this project shows the depth of his commitment to our community,” said Mayor Ron Bacon of East Lansing. “This shelter will change lives.”
The project comes as Michigan faces mounting pressure to address rising housing insecurity among youth, particularly in urban and suburban areas. With services tailored to long-term development, Izzo’s shelter is expected to serve as a model for community-based solutions across the Midwest.
Construction is already underway, and the facility is set to welcome its first residents by winter.
