MORGANTOWN, WV — Netflix has officially announced the upcoming release of “The Underdog,” a powerful new sports documentary chronicling the extraordinary rise and enduring legacy of West Virginia University (WVU) football icon Pat White. The film promises to offer an intimate, never-before-seen look into the life and career of one of college football’s most dynamic and beloved dual-threat quarterbacks.
Scheduled to premiere in Fall 2025, “The Underdog” takes viewers on an emotional journey through Pat White’s inspiring path — from a quiet, overlooked recruit out of Daphne, Alabama, to one of the most decorated players in WVU football history. The documentary is executive produced by Emmy-winning director Ava DuVernay, with original interviews from White, former coaches like Rich Rodriguez and Bill Stewart, teammates including Steve Slaton and Owen Schmitt, and appearances by college football analysts and Mountaineer fans.
Pat White’s legacy at WVU is nothing short of legendary. A four-year starter from 2005–2008, White led the Mountaineers to four consecutive bowl victories, including two BCS wins. He remains the only quarterback in NCAA history to win four bowl games as a starter, finishing his college career with over 10,500 total yards and 103 touchdowns. His electric style of play, combined with unmatched heart and leadership, helped define a golden era for WVU football and put Morgantown on the national map.
The documentary dives deeper than game stats—it captures White’s resilience through injuries, his loyalty to West Virginia when other opportunities knocked, and the racial and cultural dynamics he navigated as a trailblazing Black quarterback in a blue-collar Appalachian state.
“This is not just a football story,” says director Malik Thompson. “It’s a story of faith, perseverance, and rewriting expectations. Pat White became a symbol of hope, not just for West Virginia, but for every underdog who ever dared to dream big.”
“The Underdog” will be available for streaming exclusively on Netflix starting October 17, 2025. Early reviews from private screenings have called it “emotional,” “authentic,” and “one of the most important college football documentaries ever made.”
For the Mountaineer faithful, “The Underdog” is more than a film—it’s a tribute to the man who made a state believe.
