West Virginia University (WVU) has long been known for its proud athletic traditions, and this year, four legends who left an indelible mark on Mountaineer sports are being honored with induction into the prestigious WVU Sports Hall of Fame. The newest members—Bill Kirelawich, Pat McAfee, Bill Stewart, and Darrell Whitmore—represent different eras, sports, and contributions, but all share one thing in common: a lasting impact on the university and its fans.

Bill Kirelawich, a defensive coaching staple for the Mountaineers, is remembered as one of the toughest and most respected position coaches in WVU history. Known for his no-nonsense approach and ability to develop hard-hitting defensive linemen, Kirelawich helped mold generations of athletes who embodied grit and determination on the field. His legacy is seen not only in the victories but in the players he mentored who carried his lessons far beyond the gridiron.

Pat McAfee, perhaps the most recognizable name in this group to a modern audience, is celebrated both for his career as WVU’s punter and kicker and for the way he carried Mountaineer pride into the professional world. Known for his booming leg and fearless personality, McAfee electrified games with his play and later became a household name as an NFL star and media personality. His induction is a nod not only to his athletic excellence but also to the way he has represented WVU on a national stage with charisma and passion.

Bill Stewart, the late former head football coach, is remembered with deep affection by Mountaineer fans. Stewart led WVU to one of its most iconic wins in the 2008 Fiesta Bowl, defeating Oklahoma in stunning fashion. His leadership style, rooted in humility, encouragement, and love for the university, endeared him to players and fans alike. His induction serves as a tribute to a man who embodied the heart and soul of WVU football.

Finally, Darrell Whitmore brought excitement and versatility to the program as a standout defensive back and multi-sport athlete. Known for his speed, athleticism, and game-changing plays, Whitmore gave fans countless memorable moments during his time at WVU. His contributions on the field remain a vital part of Mountaineer history.

Together, these four honorees showcase the diversity and depth of WVU’s athletic legacy. From coaches to players, from fiery personalities to humble leaders, they represent everything the Hall of Fame stands for—excellence, dedication, and lifelong Mountaineer pride.
