Former Alabama Crimson Tide star Damien Harris is full of admiration for his alma mater’s new quarterback, Ty Simpson, who has quickly become one of college football’s brightest stars.
In his first full season as the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback, the 22-year-old junior has powered Alabama to a 5-1 record and a No. 6 national ranking heading into their highly anticipated matchup against the No. 11 Tennessee Volunteers. Simpson’s statistical dominance — 16 touchdowns, just one interception, and a 172.4 passer efficiency rating — has firmly placed him among the frontrunners for the Heisman Trophy.
“Ty Simpson’s been nothing short of amazing,” Harris said in an exclusive interview. “Even in the Week 1 game against Florida State, when everything around him wasn’t going well — from communication to defensive struggles — he stayed composed, made smart decisions, and never put the ball in harm’s way.”
Simpson earned the starting role over highly touted freshman Keelon Russell, and he’s proven that head coach Kalen DeBoer made the right call. Harris says Simpson has transformed into “the general” of the Alabama offense — a leader who controls formations, signals routes, and manages pressure with poise beyond his years.
“He gets guys lined up, communicates perfectly, and even uses just a look or a signal to adjust plays,” Harris explained. “He’s taken full control of this offense. I don’t know if there’s anybody I can compare him to.”
Still, Harris likened Simpson’s style to a blend of AJ McCarron’s precision and Mac Jones’ pocket presence, adding that Simpson also brings mobility similar to Jalen Milroe’s. “He extends plays, converts third downs with his legs, and allows receivers to uncover late,” Harris said. “His talent level is phenomenal.”
Ahead of Alabama’s rivalry clash with Tennessee, Harris emphasized the importance of sticking to Alabama’s brand of football — balancing a strong running game with disciplined defense. He also challenged sophomore receiver Ryan Williams to step up his consistency, noting that his potential mirrors that of Ohio State star Jeremiah Smith.
Off the field, Harris will represent Alabama at Dr. Pepper’s “Pepper Portal” gameday event, connecting fans from Tuscaloosa to Knoxville. “When you think college football, you think Dr. Pepper,” he said. “It’s all about the fans — the passion, the pride, and the energy that make this sport special.”
