In fact, recent reports indicate that the club has continued to back him, particularly after the squad underwent significant changes during the summer transfer window.
The pressure, however, is real.
Rangers endured a disappointing beginning to McInnes’ reign, including a European exit that left supporters frustrated. The club crashed out of the Europa League qualifying rounds against Jagiellonia Białystok, extending McInnes’ winless start in competitive matches at the time. The result produced loud criticism from sections of the Ibrox support.
The situation became even more uncomfortable after Rangers later suffered another European disappointment, exiting the Conference League play-offs against Jablonec on penalties. Reports subsequently suggested that McInnes was under significant pressure, although Rangers were not expected to immediately dismiss him.
That distinction is important.
Rangers invested heavily in rebuilding the squad during the summer, with McInnes playing an influential role in recruitment. Removing him so quickly would therefore represent a major decision for the club, particularly when the manager has not yet had sufficient time to properly develop his new team.
There have nevertheless been signs of improvement.
Rangers recently recorded victories over Falkirk and Motherwell, giving McInnes some breathing room. Lawrence Shankland has also started finding the net, scoring twice against Falkirk before contributing to Rangers’ recent run of results. The 1–0 victory over Motherwell represented a third consecutive league win and provided a much-needed boost to McInnes and his players.
For now, therefore, the headline should not be “McInnes sacked.” The reality is more complicated: the Rangers manager is under pressure, but there is no confirmed dismissal.
The coming weeks could prove decisive. Rangers supporters expect their club to compete for trophies, challenge Celtic and perform strongly in every major competition. McInnes knows that results will ultimately determine his future.
If Rangers continue winning, the current controversy could quickly disappear. But if performances deteriorate again, the calls for change could become impossible for the Rangers hierarchy to ignore.
