Gareth Bale Reportedly Reaches Agreement to Become Celtic Coach as Martin O’Neill Considers Future
Gareth Bale has reportedly reached an agreement to become the next head coach of Celtic, with the proposed deal expected to be concluded in the coming days if Martin O’Neill decides to step down.
The potential change would represent a remarkable development for Celtic, with Bale potentially moving directly from his celebrated playing career into one of the biggest managerial jobs in Scottish football.
O’Neill’s future has come under scrutiny following a difficult spell of results. After Celtic’s recent defeat to Rangers, the experienced manager openly admitted that he would reflect on his position and speak with the club’s board about his future.

The situation has generated speculation that O’Neill could decide to resign during the international break. However, Celtic chief executive Michael Nicholson subsequently indicated that the club intended to support O’Neill and the players, suggesting that no resignation had been officially confirmed at that point.

Against that backdrop, reports linking Bale with Celtic have created considerable excitement.
Bale has no previous experience as a senior club manager, making a move to Celtic an entirely new chapter in his football career. The Welshman retired from professional football in 2023 after a hugely successful career, including five Champions League victories with Real Madrid and an influential role in Wales’ rise on the international stage.
His potential appointment would therefore be a major gamble in terms of experience, but it would also bring enormous attention to Celtic.
The former Tottenham and Real Madrid star understands the pressures surrounding elite football and spent much of his career working under some of the game’s most successful coaches. A move into management would now test whether those experiences can translate into leadership from the touchline.
Celtic officially appointed O’Neill on a one-year contract in June 2026, with an option for a further year, after he guided the club to the Scottish Premiership title and Scottish Cup during his interim spell.

For that reason, any change would require a formal decision from both O’Neill and the Celtic hierarchy.
At present, the reported Bale agreement remains unconfirmed by Celtic, while O’Neill’s departure has also not been officially announced. The coming days could therefore be crucial if the claims surrounding Bale are to develop into an official managerial appointment.
If Bale does eventually take charge, Celtic would begin a fascinating new era with one of the most decorated British footballers of his generation making his first major step into management.
