🚨 Manchester City’s 4–2 Defeat to PSG Exposes Major Weaknesses as Maresca’s Second-Half Changes Spark Hope! 💙⚽

Manchester City suffered a painful 4–2 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain, but the result tells only part of the story. While PSG dominated the first half with an outstanding attacking performance, City’s dramatic improvement after the break provided several important lessons for manager Enzo Maresca. The second half showed that City have the quality to compete with Europe’s strongest teams, provided the right tactical decisions are made.

    PSG Dominate the First Half

From the opening whistle, PSG looked dangerous, taking full advantage of City’s attacking midfield setup. Luis Enrique’s side moved the ball quickly, exploited spaces between the lines, and consistently put City’s defensive structure under pressure.

Vitinha, Warren Zaïre-Emery, and Fabián Ruiz controlled the midfield battle, making life extremely difficult for City’s players. Their movement and passing created opportunities that City struggled to contain.

Another major problem came down City’s right-hand side, where Désiré Doué caused significant difficulties. Abdukodir Khusanov struggled to contain the French attacker, highlighting the risks of using a centre-back in an unfamiliar right-back position.

Khusanov has demonstrated that he possesses the pace and defensive ability to help City in difficult situations. However, asking him to perform consistently in a position that does not suit his natural game can create unnecessary problems.

By halftime, PSG had established a commanding 3–0 lead, leaving City with plenty of questions to answer.

    Maresca’s Tactical Changes Transform City

The second half brought a completely different performance from Manchester City. Maresca responded immediately, making three substitutions and adjusting his team’s structure.

Matheus Nunes moved to right-back, allowing Khusanov to return to his natural position at centre-back. Meanwhile, Doku made way for Ndiaye, and Bouaddi replaced Cherki.

These changes helped City regain control of the midfield and improve their defensive organisation.

Bouaddi’s introduction proved particularly important. His presence allowed Enzo Fernández and Nico González to play with greater freedom, giving City more control over possession and helping them progress the ball more effectively.

Nunes also looked comfortable at right-back, offering defensive stability while supporting City’s attacking movements. Meanwhile, Khusanov appeared much more assured at centre-back, where his pace, physical presence, and distribution could be used more effectively.

Ndiaye also made a positive impression after coming off the bench. His direct running, energy, and willingness to attack gave City another dimension going forward. His performance strengthened the argument that he deserves serious consideration for a starting position.

The Scoreline Does Not Tell the Whole Story

Despite the defeat, City’s second-half performance suggested that the contest could have ended differently. PSG goalkeeper Matvei Safonov produced several important saves, while City also struck the woodwork on multiple occasions.

The match appeared to be heading towards a much tighter finish before Gianluigi Donnarumma’s late mistake contributed to another decisive moment.

Nevertheless, City cannot ignore the defensive weaknesses exposed during the opening 45 minutes. Against opponents of PSG’s quality, poor positioning and a lack of midfield control can quickly become costly.

Maresca Must Learn From This Defeat

The biggest lesson is clear: Manchester City need to find the right balance between attacking ambition and defensive security.

Starting Bouaddi against teams with powerful midfields could provide greater protection and allow Enzo Fernández and González to influence matches more effectively. Nunes should also be considered the preferred option at right-back, while Khusanov looks better suited to centre-back.

Ultimately, the defeat against PSG was disappointing, but the second-half response offered encouragement.

Now, the responsibility rests with Maresca. He must recognise what worked, correct what failed, and ensure City begin their next match with the organisation and intensity they displayed after the break.

Manchester City may have lost 4–2, but their second-half performance delivered a message: the right tactical adjustments could make all the difference. 💙🔥
